Music Style Schubert is my primary influence. I listened to Schubert lieder hours a day when young. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and to a lesser extent Debussy, Chopin and Schumann inspired me, too. I studied and performed 20th century art music in college and as a professor, and enjoy Bartok and Stravinsky. The Beatles were on top of the world in my teens and early 20’s – I loved them, also the old time blues and world music. Minimalism appeals to me. The high desert and Native American spirituality have profoundly shaped my aesthetic sense; my first years were spent near the San Juan Pueblo in New Mexico. All of these diverse influences emerge in my music. Lyricism and waterlike patterns are common. The motion of a stream or river flowing, or the ocean surf, entrances me. Though I understand nontonal and polytonal pitch selection, I believe there is still room for authentic expression within the boundaries of tonality. I treasure the way it can capture emotional subtlety, including - especially – happiness. I wish to create moments of beauty.
