Paul Hendel was my brother. Before he died in 2008, I promised to keep singing his songs. This CD is my best effort as a tribute to the amazing person that was my brother. Paul was a complex man, and wrote about life and its many aspects. His stories are filled with heartache and humor and touch parts of life that most songwriters don’t touch. As a child, Paul always sided with the underdog, and tried to understand the world through their eyes. His songs reflect his passions, expressed in few and simple words, and are about outlaws, has-beens, prostitutes, troubled relationships, irreverence, vengeance, death and failure. For those who knew Paul, this will be a chance to revisit his spirit. For those of you who never had the opportunity to know him, this collection can be a window into a very special man. My thanks go out to Madelon, my wonderful sister-in-law, for all her support for this project. Michael Stanton was a major source of support and help for Paul and many of the early works, and was a life-long friend. Special thanks to Barry Ward and his WMA award-winning rendition of Eli Crow, and appreciation to Joe Bethancourt for his heart-felt rendering of Can’t Ride Back in Time. Others in the western music world also contributed to Paul’s music, including Les Buffum. Mike Ley, and others that I can’t recall or don’t know. I am in appreciation of all of these people. This collection could never have been done without the help of my friend and partner in the project, Eddie Meisse, who I regard as Mr. Steel Guitar. He kept me practicing and really understood Paul’s music, and helped bring it to life. Eddie has been key to the evolution of the album.
