Popis - WELCOME TO MOUNT PLEASANT:
Cancellieri is the creative outlet of singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Ryan Hutchens, who says of the music, 'Cancellieri is a life project. It's the family name. The music was born from street performance and playing for family, and it's grown into a way to survive. I don't think Cancellieri will ever have an end because there is always more to experiment with musically.' Cancellieri released his first full length album, Welcome To Mount Pleasant, via the Columbia SC based label, Post Echo, on April 15 2014. 'WTMP' continues his shift away from electronic production techniques and explores more traditional American songwriting and instrumentation. Kyle Peterson, writing for Jasper Magazine describes the result as 'Anthemic Indie Rock Grandeur'. Several musicians from other Columbia bands joined up with Hutchens during the recording process to give the album a bigger and more complete sound than anything Cancellieri had done before. Michael Crawford on drums; Cameron Powell on bass guitar; and Alex McCollum producing, recording, and playing various instruments. Welcome To Mount Pleasant received excited and positive reviews from music writers and bloggers who have heard Cancellieri grow from his roots in busking folk tunes and constructing ambient electronic soundscapes into his own blend of indie folk-rock. Comparisons are often drawn to a combination of the unique styles of Elliot Smith, Cass McCombs, Band Of Horses, Jim James, and Neil Young. 'These Songs feel like wizened travelogues that give way to moments of pure catharsis, and singer and band know just the right moment to lift off or return to ground.' writes Kyle Peterson for Jasper Magazine. Kevin Oliver, writing for Music That Matters, said of Cancellieri '..like Elliott Smith covering Neil Young, imparting feeling and nuanced lyricism..' Cancellieri first came into being as a name for the collection of home crafted, mostly electronic, lo-fi songs that Ryan Hutchens was creating on Garageband and sharing with the internet in 2010 while living in Columbia South Carolina. In the spring of 2011, Ryan began traveling around the US and depending largely on busking cover songs and folk tunes on street corners for sustenance and gas money. On returning to South Carolina, he took some of his songs, now augmented by a summers worth of experience, to a recording studio in Atlanta where he put together his first EP, entitled 'Early Spring'. Hutchens says of the experience, 'It was my first real attempt at completing a musical idea; simplifying some of the ambient electronic work I was doing and combining it with a more down to earth, acoustic guitar and vocals driven, style that I found people around the country were connecting with and enjoying.' The release of 'Early Spring' was followed by a year of slow growth in songwriting and a shift to using more traditional instruments like piano and guitar. Cancellieri honed the craft of live performance by busking, playing open mic solo shows, and doing an occasional full band show mostly in and around South Carolina. Cancellieri's second EP, 'Bad Hands', is a five song collection of mostly piano driven, melodic, soft, and dreamy folk pop tunes that drew largely from the styles of bands like Youth Lagoon and the Avett Brothers. Tyler Hanan, of Nothing Sounds Better, called the 'Bad Hands' EP 'astonishingly pretty, tranquil as a painting'. On the heels of his second EP, Hutchens picked up the bass guitar and passed another year touring extensively with the instrumental rock group, Pan. He continued to write new music and play sporadically as Cancellieri while on break from touring. In 2013 Hutchens left Pan and teamed up with Alex McCollum of the Columbia based band 'Stagbriar' to record his third EP, entitled 'III'. Combining his years of performance experience and experimentation in styles and instruments, Hutchens succeeded in creating a hazy and mournful soft folk pop feel that blends thoughtful honest lyrics with emotive soundscapes and a touch of empty space. Alex and several other area musicians put their own touches on the compositions including cello, banjo, percussion, and vocal harmony. The music blog, Indie Obsessive, says of 'III', 'If there is a better fusion of acoustic guitar with shoegaze guitar, we haven't heard it'. Patrick Wall, writing for the Free Times in Columbia SC, said 'Cancellieri traded electronic soundscapes for Americana on 'III' and proved himself a surprisingly strong songwriter' David Stringer of Scene SC writes, 'The magic of this EP comes in the casual excellence of the vocals and the easiness of how every little sound throughout the album fits together.' Through three years, hundreds of performances, and four distinct and ever evolving musical releases, Cancellieri has developed an open and honest songwriting style, powerful and soaring vocal performances, and a vivid palette of ambient indie folk anthems. Fans and critics alike are taking notice as they discover Cancellieri, and Hutchens continues to tour as a solo acoustic act around North America to spread the music, grow a following, and explore his musical possibilities.
