With a history of performing in rock bands since his teens, as well as studying classical composition in university and conservatory environments, Damen Liebling has a rich and eclectic musical foundation. His debut album, Tonic, provides a first sampling of both his songwriting and instrumental composition. If there is a line between serious art and entertainment, Damen tight rope walks it as a songwriter. The melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, & timbral material with which he works is designed to engage the listener, but also to challenge them to dive into a deeper, broader, and perhaps more complex wellspring of feeling than is typical of popular music. His lyrics deal with the vital issues which all people must face in this time of massive change and looming crises, as the human-made world of structures, systems, and technologies reveals its self destructive roots. The words speak of the realities we must face at this time, the importance of retaining human kindness, compassion, and cooperation in such times of adversity, and the emotional and intellectual challenges of being a person born and raised within an unhealthy civilization. As a composer of instrumental works, Damen treats his music as a guide for the listeners meditation. Damen sets out to create an experience for the listener that will both stretch them and sooth them, both challenge and comfort -all in a proportion designed with the hope of delivering maximum healing and growth. The belief that art can provide this, just as life experience does, is foundational to Damen's approach.
