Popis - THE GOLDEN APPLES OF THE SUN:
Yasuaki has made a significant contribution to percussion in brass bands both in terms of his innovative commissioning of new major works for solo percussion with brass band and by his thoughtful, inspiring and virtuoso performances. - Simone Rebello (Percussion virtiosi) I am very excited to hear the new CD by Yasuaki, who is a quite outstanding performer and musician. This is something not to be missed! - Steven Mead (World famous Euphonium player) Yasu's performance of Rodney Newton's Concerto is absolutely fabulous. - Richard Evans (Leading conductor in British brass band world) Programme notes ----------- Battlefield is a solo xylophone piece with the band written by David Danford and commissioned by Yasuaki Fukuhara. The Battle of Shrewsbury was fought on 21 July 1403 between an army led by the Lancastrian King Henry IV and a rebel army led by Henry 'Harry Hotspur' Percy from Northumberland. This solo loosely follows the story of Henry IV's forces, first starting the battle strongly, then sustaining casualties to Henry Percy's superior Cheshire bowmen, before eventually claiming victory. Percy lost his life in the battle. Dream of the Cherry Blossoms is an unaccompanied marimba solo piece based on a Japanese folk song 'Sakura, sakura...'. This marimba solo is an improvisation with a thought of the shower of the cherry blossoms. Continuous natural E notes in the whole piece represent the petals falling. Composer Keiko Abe is one of the most famous marimbists in the world. She made the marimba viable as a solo instrument in the current musical scene. Texas Hoedown is an unaccompanied solo vibraphone piece written by David Friedman, one of the most influential vibraphonists in the history of the instrument. This solo is an infectiously driving groove piece. This piece got its name from the western-inspired bass line found through out the piece. The composer David Danford comments 'The majority of my compositions are influenced by the various different genres I am involved with as a performer and my Marimba Concerto is no different. Contrasting styles such as classical, folk and electronic dance music all have a part to play here.' The first movement is a relentless jig in 12/8 time and eventually reaching its conclusion at a faster tempo. The second movement at first glance is a typical slow middle movement but it should never feel laboured. The third and final movement opens with a groove in 7/8 time before settling into a fast, driving 4/4 feel and a marimba cadenza that draws its material from all three movements of the concerto. This concerto was commissioned by Yasuaki Fukuhara. Suomineito is an unaccompanied vibraphone piece written by Nebojša Jovan Živkovic, a virtuoso percussionist and a master at composing music for percussion. The title is Finish, a language of Suomi people and it means 'Finish girl'. This piece was inspired by the Finish folk song 'Heili Karjalasta'. The original song is at a fast tempo with a happy mood- however, he wrote a quiet and melancholic piece with his thoughts of a Finish girl he met in Finland. Anthracite Dances was commissioned by Yasuaki Fukuhara for solo xylophone with the band. The composer James Mcfadyen writes: 'Anthracite is a type of coal which has the highest carbon content of all types of coal. It also has the fewest impurities. With this in mind, I set about writing a sprightly ragtime piece that has a strand of darkness running through it. The Anthracite is symbolism for the Xylophone blocks, to give the impression that Yasuaki is playing a Xylophone made from blocks of Anthracite. The piece is written in open key and is highly modal, particularly in the section where the lower band have chords and the Xylophone improvises over the top with a given set of notes.' Pachelbel's 'Canon' is surely one of the most famous pieces of music and Japanese marimba virtuoso Nanae Mimura arranged it for unaccompanied marimba solo piece as Transformations of Pachelbel's Canon. This piece is constructed from variations, from quiet and calm to heavy and energetic. The Golden Apples of the Sun was written by Rodney Newton and was commissioned and premi?red in January 2013 by Yasuaki Fukuhara on RNCM Festival of Brass 2013. The title was taken from the final verse of W. B. Yeats's poem, The Song of Wandering Aengus: Though I am old with wandering Through hollow lands and hilly lands, I will find where she has gone, And kiss her lips and take her hands; And walk among long dappled grass, And pluck till time and times are done, The silver apples of the moon, The golden apples of the sun. This piece does not seek to follow the narrative of the poem, bit rather takes lines from it as an inspiration for three contrasting movements. The first movement, Through hollow lands and hilly lands, is in the form of a dogged march over a repeated bass line, featuring tom-toms, snare drum and cymbals playing rhythms associated with rock drumming. The second movement, The silver apples of the moon, features vibraphone, glockenspiel and crotales as well as dobachi (a resonant bronze bowl of Japanese origin). The music is delicate and ethereal. In contrast, the final movement, The golden apples of the sun, is energetic and fiery, featuring tubular bells, timpani and other tuned percussion instruments including cowbells.
