This year has included many moments of excitement, surprises, creative differences, and turning points for everyone involved. There are many memorable moments for me as Executive Producer. The early morning telephone call from Colby, telling me of his experience of seeing the sunrise over our church as he mixed Love Came Down, or the text message telling me of his recording of the background vocals for God Of Wonders on the shoulder of the freeway as he drove back to L.A. For most of us, this was our first experience with recording. All members of Daily Bread are grateful for the patience, caring, and support given by Colby as our producer. His experience and talent have been key to developing the sound you will hear on this, our first album of our favorite songs. Below are some highlights of a few of these experiences from Colby’s point of view. — Glenda Voss, Ex. Producer Love Came Down — B. Johnson, I. McIntosh, J. Edwardson, J. Riddle Inspired by the original song; I wrote and recorded the acoustic introduction to this song during an all night session at the sanctuary. At that time, the inside of the church was being renovated. New paint, new carpets, everything was so shiny and clean. All the pews and the altar had been removed; I was recording in the lobby. From that point of view looking through huge glass doors, all I could see was the cross dimly lit at the opposite end of the sanctuary. Everything was still, calm, and peaceful. Have you ever felt like you were exactly where you should be at that very moment? You don’t question it. You just let it be. It was a moment of grace and beauty, and I believe I was lucky enough to capture it in this recording. Then just before dawn, I drove to the top of the Santa Teresa hills that overlook our church. As the sun came up over the valley, I mixed this song. Today is the Day — L. Brewster, P. Baloche/Integrity Praise Music Meet Charlie Parker. I introduced him to Daily Bread 2 years ago to lead as I was moving to Los Angeles, and would only be back once or twice a month. Charlie and I had sung together at two other churches. His intense vocal is a perfect match for songs like this. Charlie and I are great together even when we disagree; we come up with the coolest stuff. “Today is the Day” has become our anthem and our first choice for a video we plan to shoot. God Loves — C. Pollard/P. Westeberg I wrote this song as a response to my frustration that organized religion can separate people from one another. Like, when I saw a bumper sticker saying, “God Bless America,” I would think, no, why not “God bless everyone.” The song is inspired by my belief that God loves all people, “no matter who you are, no matter what you do, or how you pray.” I always get a positive response to this song – people seem love it, and it is the most requested that I do. Thank you… God of Wonders — M. Byrd, S. Hindalong/Meaux Mercy Rearranging this song was a turning point for me. Finding a completely different groove, allowing a song to take a new shape and sound that evolved to the DB sound. A special thanks to Don Dias for his keyboard solo, and Barry Pollard for his harmonica. Lord Have Mercy — Steve Merkel/Integrity's Hosanna! Music My favorite. I love harmony. As I said, Charlie and I are great together. Here’s the two of us not knowing when to stop. What a beautiful song. Trading My Sorrows — Darrell Evans/Integrity's Hosanna! Music The first song we recorded together. Daily Bread’s youngest member, Eric Everson, plays the driving bass line. Eric is like the stenographer in a courtroom. I’ll show him something, anything — a riff, a pattern, complicated or simple… When I ask him to play it back for me, he rewinds and plays it back perfectly. I love how effortless it is for him to get it. He stands next to me every Sunday out of view of his mom who’s in the choir and his Dad who plays Lead Guitar in the band. We torture each other every chance we get with harmless, minor annoyances. He’s a real asset to Daily Bread. Just listen. Matchless — Aaron Shust/Bridge Building Music, Inc. A song brought to us by Jay, and recording it became his turning point. His words, “after recording for many hours, for the very first time, I felt connected to my guitar, and to what my fingers were playing. What I played came from feeling and I was no longer just duplicating the notes!” Hallelujah — Colby Pollard Gwen’s recording session was a moment of emotional intensity, and a turning point for both of us. As she and I listened to the playback, we both began to cry; we couldn’t continue that evening. Also, this was the first time that Gwen had heard her own voice and understood its beauty. Something she had never known before. This recording was so awesome, we didn’t want to leave it off of the album, it seemed to work well as an intro to Hallelujah. Your Grace is Enough — M. Maher/Thankyou Music I recorded this song while in L.A., and sent it to Glenda at 4AM Easter morning, meant as an Easter gift, as I was missing Easter for the first time in three years. She had it played during morning service. We never got back to it to add the instruments and other vocals we wanted to; it’s in its rawest form, and we weren’t going to include it on the album. However, Jay insisted. He convinced us that it has an authenticity that deserves to be heard. Daily Bread is grateful to New Creation Church congregation for their support and the commissioning of this CD. Our thanks also to Larry Schaeffer & West Wave Recording, Dave Santos, Matt Diggs, Paul “Polo” Jones, Paul Reginelli, Joe Rizzi, Eric Wilkins, Paul Collins, Alex Muchkin, and Jim Underwood. And to the Spirit of Love that is in the music, “Love will go on and on, as it has and always will” Produced by Colby Pollard / Executive Producer - Glenda Voss / Engineered and Mixed by Colby Pollard & Jay Everson Recorded and Mixed at Scion Studio and Solano Road, Chelsea Studio
