Many have pondered the question 'when will Tantrum drop a solo album?' Many others could probably care less. But no matter how you slice it, most can probably attribute to recognizing the name upon hearing it through the buzz of the battle circuit, most notably by the youtube footage of me competing in the well-established league known as 'Grind Time Now'. Musically though, I got my humble start back in 2002 with my then, rap group, Rising Asterisk. Since then we've dropped numerous albums in our leisure, only to constantly develop and evolve our skills with each project. So although 'Backlash' is my first SOLO release, I am no stranger to music making by any means. I've had plenty of time to 'learn the ropes', figure out what works and what doesn't, and most of all know what direction I want to take with my sound. I haven't dropped a CD since my group's last release in 2008 (titled 'Rise & Shine'). A lot has happened since then and I've grown to have much to get off my chest (good and bad). So from all the things that fuel me, annoy me, upset me, or inspire me, this is my reaction to all of that, hence the term 'Backlash'. It's safe to say that this album isn't your typical run of the mill release you would normally hear from a battle rapper. Nor is it something you would normally hear from....well anywhere else. With all the redundant gimmicks in the hip hop industry, you can call it a jaded fan's way of going against the grain. Talking about the things I want to talk about. Taking the musical directions I want to take. Ultimately, expressing my own individualism without being tied down to a certain image or ideal created by record labels that wouldn't know the definition of creativity if it suddenly appeared and kicked them in the groin. My aim is to push the envelope whether it be rhyme structure, topics, or simply just the way a verse is approached. That also involves saying the things that most others either wouldn't have the courage to say or just haven't thought to say yet. For those of you who appreciate a combination of technical lyricism and heavy content over captivatingly powerful instrumentals, this is right up your alley. Even though there are parts where I approach a track in an aggressive battle-esque manner, I do intend to get certain messages across in each song. I'm not one who believes in making songs for the sake of filling up a track list. Every song should be made with a purpose. In the end, I'm not here to brag about my accolades or claim that I'm some kind of rap god like every other rapper trying to feed their ego. I'm just here to share my views and life experiences in hopes that you, the listeners, can vibe with me and relate on an emotional and psychological level. To the critics, you may not agree with everything I say, but at least you know I'm giving you nothing less than my honest perspective without sugar-coating. To the fans, you are everything that keeps me grounded and I am forever grateful for each of you holding me down. To everyone else, if you've even read this far then I thank you for even taking the time out your day even if you have no idea who I am. Just know that any music I put out is representative of who I am as an artist. I would never bother with releasing a piece of work if I didn't feel like it was genuinely me. - Tantrum
