Papilio “First Flight” Album Liner Notes All tracks arranged by Papilio: Anthony Rissesco (fiddle / vocals) Jennifer Publicover (Irish flutes / modern flute / bodhrán) Phil Schappert (guitars / bouzar / bass uke) Papilio is a neo-traditional acoustic trio based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Join them on a musical tour through the cultures of Ireland, Scotland, Brittany (France), Spain, Cape Breton, Quebec, Scandinavia, the Balkans, and uncharted lands beyond. With fiddle, flutes, vocals and guitar, Papilio renders a mix of international instrumentals, original compositions, and folk songs with their own distinctive creative twist. Papilio has performed at the Stan Rogers Folk Festival, the Celtic Colours International Festival, the East Coast Music Awards, and at other festivals and concert venues across the Atlantic Provinces. This is their debut album. 1. Amanda (Roger Tallroth) 3:29 A Swedish polska from one of our favourite composers, Roger Tallroth of the band Väsen. We think Amanda’s a very lucky girl to have had such a lovely tune named after her! 2. La fée des dents (André Brunet) 4:23 Guest: Darren McMullen, mandolin Anthony learned this lovely slow jig, the title of which translates as “The Tooth Fairy”, from composer André Brunet of the band De Temps Antan while sharing a stage at the Summerfolk Festival in Owen Sound, ON. When Anthony introduced it to us, we were immediately smitten with it. 3. Bucimiš (Trad. Bulgarian) 3:39 Guest: Nick Halley, percussion Bucimiš (pronounced “boo chee Meesh”) is a traditional Bulgarian tune in 15/16 time, played for a particular Thracian dance that is performed low to the ground and in a line. Its title means “Hemlock”. One memorable night we launched into this tune in an Irish pub in Halifax, after which an elderly lady accused us of playing “rock & roll”. She may not have been far off the mark… 4. Awkward Annie / 30-?rs Jiggen (Kate Rusby / Roger Tallroth) 4:09 Guest: Darren McMullen, mandola A wonderfully silly song from Kate Rusby that musically suggested a jig to use as an instrumental break. The 30-Years’ Jig was written by Roger Tallroth and dedicated to his Väsen bandmate, Olov Johansson, on the occasion of Olov’s 30th birthday. 5. Kishor’s Tune / Kudel (So?g Sibéril / Jacky Molard) 5:34 Breton guitarist So?g Sibéril wrote Kishor’s Tune for sitar player Kishor Gosh after touring with him in Brittany. Kudel is another contemporary Breton tune by violin, mandolin, and guitar player, and So?g’s sometimes bandmate, Jacky Molard. Phil has been a big So?g fan since the first Kornog album and first heard Kudel on a Breton compilation album. 6. Peggie & Garech: Peggie, I Must Love Thee / Garech’s Wedding (William McGibbon / Paddy Moloney) 4:24 Jen thanks musicologist, fiddler, and friend Kate Dunlay for introducing her to the beautiful old Scottish air opening this set. It leads into a lovely contemporary Irish slip jig by Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains. We like to think that Peggie and Garech would’ve made beautiful music together… 7. Caledonia (Dougie MacLean) 4:15 “Caledonia” is the ancient Latin name given by the Romans to what is now Scotland. Dougie MacLean’s classic ode to his homeland has reached the status of an alternative national anthem. 8. F Strathspeys & Reels: The Lass of Corrie Mills / Lennox’s Love to Blantyre / Dan Galbey’s Reel / Archie Menzie’s (all Traditional) 3:52 Anthony says a Scottish song should be followed by some strathspeys! So here is a classic Cape Breton set of strathspeys and reels, with Jen leaving her flutes to pick up bodhrán. Archie Menzie’s was written by Scottish fiddler John Lowe (d. 1866). This track is featured on the Celtic Colours International Festival 2012 (Vol. XVI) compilation album. 9. Mui?eiras: Mui?eira d’Anton / Mui?iera de Casu (Trad. Asturian) 4:51 Guest: Glenn Coolen, uilleann pipes The regions of Asturias and Galicia are strongholds of Celtic culture in northwestern Spain. A mui?eira is roughly equivalent to a jig (6/8 time). Many tunes from these regions are simply named after the town in which they are created, and so these jigs come from the districts of Anton and Casu. 10. Chorolations (Jennifer Publicover) 3:15 Guest: Nick Halley, percussion A happy tune in 7/8 time written by Jen in the spirit of the dance music of southeastern Europe. An “oro”, “choro” or “horo” is a Balkan dance form, hence a bit of word play on the title of this tune. 11. Happy Jigs: Kalyana / The Orchid Hunt / Taylor Bar, 4am (Emer Mayock / Phil Schappert /Donogh Hennessy) 4:33 A trio of happy little jigs. Emer Mayock wrote Kalyana while walking on the beach of Sandymount, Dublin, with whistle and book in hand. Its name came to her out of a book she was reading. The Orchid Hunt commemorates a happy weekend that Phil spent hunting for terrestrial orchids in southwest Nova Scotia. Donogh wrote Taylor Bar, 4am, about a favorite bar in Galway city on the west coast of Ireland which he and his friends frequented. 12. Waltzes: Muriel’s Waltz / Valse des jeunes filles (Brian Pickell / Trad.) 4:29 Guest: Alys Howe, harp Our favorite waltz set for ending contra dances. The first waltz was written by Brian Pickell and dedicated to his mother, Muriel. Valse des jeunes filles (“Waltz of the Little Girls”) is Belgian Walloon and is an iconic staple of many traditions. 13. Yah Yah the Cable-Chewer 0:24 [Bonus track on compact disc only.] A lovable fixture to every session in the studio, Yah Yah has reached iconic status through sheer personal magnetism. He is a sweet grey feline with an expensive taste for audio cables, having gnawed through a small fortune of them. This is his recording debut. Produced by Papilio and Glen Coolen.
