Though by necessity self-recorded and published, the songs are not rendered less beautiful or spirited. Wijnands has a pure, fine voice that lends itself strikingly to melancholy ballads, but sometimes can also swing, sultry and fine. Her voice from a distance reminds one of Lucinda Williams, but also shreds of Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris pass us by.Together with guitarist Wouter Planteijdt, drummer Richard Heijerman and bassist Peter Wassenaar, who have been with Marijn for a while, are the new arrivals, multi -intrumentalist Janos Koolen and guitarist Marcel de Groot.Koolen is responsible for the distinctive banjo and mandolin sound. De Groot treats us to the occasional sample of slide work. It is obvious that these seasoned musicians are more than convinced of the talent that harbors itself within Wijnands the singer-songwriter. Together they form Ma Rain, a staunch collective that sparks with the pleasure of playing together.
