In the mid-'70s, musician and songwriter Phil Arosa fled the apartheid of Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) to settle in the Netherlands and pursue his musical career under more mundane skies. With his partner Marga he started the band Zimba, which enjoyed a 10-year career of playing clubs around the country.
During its active days Zimba released only one song, 'Baleka', which stayed under the radar back in 1983. This 12-inch contains not only the original recording of 'Baleka', but also two new versions courtesey of London's The Comet Is Coming and Blackjoy (Siwo) from Paris. This minimal and powerful mix of African rhythms with new wave vocals, and an irresistible mbira gimmick won't stay unnoticed this time around. And now get your ass over to that dancefloor!
