I have to admit that in the mid eighties, there was a real transition that took place in the music industry, and it happened fast. The popular “Westcoast” sound, was replaced by the British Power Pop invasion. Record labels were chasing their tails trying to sign the next big artists from the UK and discarding a vast array of artists that were the mainstay of the industry up until that point. At the same time, my career as a songwriter was taking hold and that’s where I decided to concentrate my energies. After all, my long-term goal was to make a living in this business. So for the next 15 years as a staff songwriter for Warner Brothers Music Publishing, I pitched songs to artists and collaborated with many great songwriters. Over the years, I would sometimes hear that my name was brought up in interviews with Greg Mathieson, Steve Lukather or Mike Porcaro regarding the making of “All Dressed Up” and how my record was highly regarded in certain circles. I was completely unaware that “All Dressed Up” had become a cult favorite amongst “Westcoast” music lovers. It wasn’t until a fan wrote to me and pointed out that it was selling for $300 on eBay that I began to realize my music had actually touched people in a way that had never occurred to me. In all that time, I never stopped singing and writing so when the opportunity arose to record “Better Late Than Never” I jumped at it. Suddenly what was old, was new again and fans were longing for that familiar sound they had such fond memories of and now a whole new generation of music lovers are being exposed to my music. Greg Mathieson once again helmed the project as well as played keyboards. He recruited world renowned musicians, Abraham Laboriel Sr., Michael Landau, Mike Baird and Luis Conte to play on 5 songs. The other half of the project was produced by Fred Mollin utilizing some of the best musicians in Nashville. After some false starts and many years of people asking me to record again, along with my own personal desire to get it done, the thought process behind the title track “Better Late Than Never” is to say, there are no more excuses and although it’s long long over due, I am finally able to deliver on the promises. With it, I tried to capture the essence of the entire project because we all know it’s easy to give up, and there are numerous obstacles along the road of life, but perseverance pays off in the end. The song “Stay With Me Tonight” was written with John Waite (”Missing You”). Originally slated for one of his projects, people often requested I record it. I hope I did it justice because John is such a great singer. “What I’ve Been Missing” is one of my personal favorites. It tells a story from the perspective of someone who’s lived and learned the hard way. “Before I Go” was recorded by Starship on their “Knee Deep in The Hoopla” record. Here I provide my own rendition with an updated take on it. “Be Gentle With My Heart” was co-written by Randy Goodrum. It’s highlighted by Michael Landau’s beautiful Spanish guitar playing. Lyrically “Eighth Wonder” is my most poetic song I’ve ever written and features some nice images that I really enjoyed creating.” During his 26 year hiatus as a recording artist David worked with a lot of great song writers and artists. His compositions can be heard on albums by artists like Starship, Bad English, Lee Aaron, Signal, House Of Lords, Jimmy Barnes and Boulevard. The first pressing of “Better Late Than Never” through Avenue Of Allies comes as a limited Special Edition in a jewel case with an individually numbered additional slipcase and an extensive booklet including lyrics, new liner notes by David Roberts, also all musicians are individually listed for every album track. A true gem for all AOR and Westcoast fans and music collectors. (Words: David Roberts & Gregor Klee)
