What began as a recording project in 1977 called Crap Detectors { is an example of the independent rock spirit that reaches back to the Johnny Burnette trio, revved the garages of the 60’s,exploded as punk in the late 70’s and early 80’s and is all but extinct in a world of haircuts and formula sounds. Academically trained as a painter, Jacobi works in a bright expressionist mode on his canvases. The same can be said for his music. The styles have changed on the 24 releases since the beginning, but the rawness and passion behind the music remains the same. Taking rough-hewn, three-chord guitar/bass/drum rock and pushing it until it shakes and howls. Jacobi was a punk back when the label meant something, dispersing his unflinching, often socially critical viewpoints with a devil-may-care rock n’ roll attitude with intense vocals. That of course, has never been a recipe for commercial success. Rock n’ roll is supposed to be fun and Jacobi knows it. You can read it in the titles of his discs and suss it out of lyrics from throughout his career. You can also hear it in the train-might-leave-the-tracks music that careens by. Jacobi’s now in his fifth decade of making rock n ’roll and he’s purveyed his joyful noise while living in Nebraska, Texas and Washington. That makes him a survivor. But he’ll never sound like he’s hanging on to something past it’s prime. His music is too real, too raw and too immediate for that. It will always sound like it just came out of the garage or the basement with the amps on 10 and the intensity on 11. That’s the real stuff folks.
