Reissue! Porcupine Tree are unquestionably one of the most difficult-to-categorize and innovative bands working today. The music is breathtaking, ranging from psychedelic trip-hop to progressive metal, and a compendium of other sounds and genres in between. They re-entered the studio in December 2006, once again with Steven Wilson producing, to commence recording of the bands ninth studio album. The result, 'Fear of a Blank Planet', is the bands most ambitious and cohesive work to date.
The frenetic, finger picked opening guitar riff delivers listeners into a 51-minute masterpiece of a record, modeled, in lead singer Steven Wilson's words, "on those great old LP albums of the 70s." Its a starkly beautiful elegy on the numbness, apathy, and isolation brought about by a 21st century cocktail of television, sex, preion drugs, video games, the internet, terminal boredom, and subsequent escape. The character in the title track muses that "In school I dont concentrate / And sex is kinda fun / But just another one / Of all the empty ways / Of using up a day." The six songs blend seamlessly one into the next, a symphonic arrangement of metal guitars, synthesizers, strings, fat bass lines, and Gavin Harrison's virtuosic drumming. Wilson's earnest vocals alternate between floating above the instruments and ripping right into the heart of each track. While Fear. is by no means a concept album, there is a constant thread, both musically and lyrically, that knits together its six songs in a unique fashion. Its centerpiece is a mesmerizing 17-minute piece called Anesthetize that builds in dazzling layers and features a trademark guest solo from Rush's Alex Lifeson. King Crimson's Robert Fripp also provides his haunting, cascading soundscapes to Way Out Of Here, while the album closes with the monolithic Sleep Together.
