This superb 6CD-release (limited to 1.000 boxes) collects the works of one of the strangest acts in UK's early-mid '70s psych and prog scene. Martin Raphael, born in Sheffield, had a vision from which he understood (and believed) that he was he reincarnation of the Egyptian farao Ramses. Together with his wife Dorothy (a.k.a. Selket, a.k.a. Seleka, a.k.a. Sel) he started spreading the message of Ramses through music. This resulted in some noteworthy singles on CBS, Major Minor, Philips and Vertigo Records, as well as two LP's which were released by the latter company. The 1971 debut-LP, 'Space Hymns' was recorded with musicians who'd later form 10CC, and features awesome artwork from Roger Dean. This is psychedelic and progressive music that can hardly be compared with the records by other acts from the era. The second LP, 'Glass Top Coffin' (1975) offers mellow compositions with beautiful melodies, often dominated by keyboards and hazyb and mystic atmospheres. There also are contributions from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra! Fans of the unique phenomenon that Ramases was will be delighted by this release that rounds up single sides, both albums, and rare archival material.
