“I grew up on haggard and Jones/the Beatles & the Rolling Stones/it might not be your kind, but it's my kind of country.” – My Kind Of Country. These lyrics, taken from the opening track of the debut CD from Canadian singer-songwriter Todd Sterling, pretty much sum up Sterling's philosophy on music. For the seven song collection, Sterling penned tracks that, while not necessarily 100% autobiographical, come from a real place. “My Kind Of Country” finds Sterling sticking up for those artists who color a little outside of the lines. “I grew up listening to Hank Williams, Merle Haggard and George Jones with my father,” says Sterling. “I also had the opportunity to discover some great rock artists through my brothers' record collections. I love it all – traditional country, folk, blues, rock, pop – and I hope this diversity is reflected in my music. I don't understand why there's so much bitterness and anger towards artists who don't conform to a certain old-school code. There's room for all kinds of music in the world.” From the opening edginess of “My Kind Of Country,” through to the closing simplicity of the poignant acoustic track “Jesus Is A Harley Man,” Road Songs takes the listener on a fun and raucous country-rock journey. Whether he's tapping on the funny bone for the tongue-in-cheek “Cadillacs & Fords,” or offering advice to would be romeos on the emotionally charged “How You Love A Woman,” Sterling does not disappoint.
